From the frangipani-lined, raised walkways to the show-stopping tiered infinity pool, no design detail has been overlooked at Amankila on the east coast of Bali. It has 34 suites, all nicely spaced out on the hillside and oriented to make the most of views out to the ocean – on a clear day you can see as far as Lombok Island. The interior design takes its inspiration from Balinese beach houses, and teak details combine with natural light and oodles of space to great effect.

It has one main restaurant (lunch is also served at the beach club), and seasonal and local is very much the ethos of the cuisine; we particularly loved the market fish option for dinner, for which the freshest catch is cooked any style with a choice of sauces. But the real beauty of this hotel is that, while it holds serious appeal for those looking to Zen the hell out – private terraces, a gorgeous spa and two large pools – it is also perfect for those looking for a more active break. Livingetc took part in a sunrise ‘happy’ yoga session with the resident instructor, along with stand-up paddle boarding, sailing and snorkelling, which are all available at the boat house.

What is more, this part of Bali island is particularly appealing as it is less tainted by tourism than the rest. Hire a scooter for the day and whizz along the beautiful coastline through villages and past rice paddies. Unsurprisingly, isolation comes at the price of a 1.5 hour transfer from Denpesar international airport – longer than most other high-end hotels on the island. But the journey whizzes by thanks to luxurious cars equipped with Wi-Fi, cool drinks, tasty snacks and an information pack about the hotel and area.
