You’d be surprised what kind of peaceful and rejuvenating spa experience you can have in the centre of the universe, writes Dina Koulla.
The much-loved spa at The Peninsula New York is the only place in Midtown Manhattan that can give you just that, even amid the madness of Fifth Avenue and being located just opposite Trump Tower. Boasting 35,000sq ft on the 21st floor of this grand hotel, the largest of its kind in all of NY, it offers five-star rated treatments in 14 separate rooms at any one time.
A combination of Eastern, Ayurvedic and European therapies, the staff are like old friends, welcoming you back for much needed r’n’r and enticing you with the most delightful treats.
Weary or not, jet-lagged or fighting fit, as soon as you step into this cool oasis and slip into a soft fluffy robe, you know you’re in for a treat. The allocated therapist immediately made us feel like it was time to shut out the world and its worries for at least the next hour without a shred of guilt.
The trickiest part of the session, though, was choosing which treatment to have. In the end, we opted for the MBR Age-Defying Customized Facial, the über-facial of facials in the MBR skincare range, which treats the skin down to its dermal layer to restore firmness and elasticity using the latest patent technology.
The treatment room, above, and private spa suite, below, are amazingly spacious, though cocoon-like compared to the usual smaller spaces you find in NY. But as we climbed into the warm blanketed treatment bed away from the high-rise views, we were ready for our close-up. With an intermittent facial massage carried out during the ritual of cleansing, treating and sealing the skin, identifying the problem areas and giving attention to any neglected spots, the world and its stress quickly began to melt away. The chance of a meditative slumber was made even easier with the luxurious furnishings so close to hand.
As if the staff instinctively realise that there will be a reluctance to once more get dressed and depart, the spa offers a ‘rest room’ as well as the Asian tea lounge, below, where guests can choose to relax after any treatment for as long as they wish. Its the final finishing touch, almost inviting you to never have to leave – or at least, not until it’s time to face the world again.
